Battery Connector Selection Checklist: 10 Things to Confirm Before You Order

The most common battery connector problem is ordering before one item was confirmed, then finding in production that it does not fit or does not hold contact. Here is a checklist you can use as is.

Include both tolerance extremes in the spring battery connector compression calculation.

A. Electrical

1. Working voltage and current, including peak current and continuous duty
2. Pin count and function: beyond positive and negative, any signal pins such as temperature (NTC) or ID

B. Dimensions and structure

1. Pitch: matches the battery contacts or board pads
2. Contact style: top-press, side-press, plug-in, male or female, set by your mechanics
3. Housing height and compression travel: check against worst-case tolerance of the surrounding parts
4. Mounting: SMT, through-hole, locating posts or not

For a 2.5 mm blade interface, use the PCB footprint and mounting checks to review the selected tail style before releasing its footprint.

C. Material and environment

1. Plating and terminal material: see Gold vs nickel plated contacts
2. Environment: temperature range, humidity, sweat, salt spray, vibration

D. Purchasing and validation

1. Packaging and order quantity: tape and reel, tube, pieces per reel for volume purchasing
2. Validation: get samples, run your own reliability tests, then confirm production
