Gold vs Nickel Plated Battery Contacts: Contact Resistance, Corrosion and Cost
Plating decides how stable contact resistance stays and how well a contact resists corrosion. Gold suits small signals and wearables; nickel suits higher current and cost-driven designs.
The contacts of spring and blade battery connectors are normally plated. Plating does not decide whether a part fits, but it largely decides whether the product still makes reliable contact a year or two later.
1. What plating does
The base metal, usually a copper alloy, oxidises and tarnishes over time. Plating is there to:
- keep contact resistance low and stable
- shield the base metal from sweat, humidity and salt
- improve wear resistance over repeated mating or compression
2. Gold vs nickel
- Gold is chemically stable and does not oxidise, so contact resistance stays low and steady. It suits low current and low contact force: earbuds, watches, bands and small medical devices. It costs more.
- Nickel is harder and cheaper, but an oxide film can form on the surface and contact resistance may rise over time. It suits higher contact force, higher current, cost-driven designs and milder environments.
The lower the contact force, the more the contact depends on the plating itself to conduct. Higher contact force helps break through surface oxide. This is why small spring contacts are more often specified in gold.
3. Four questions to decide
- What current does it carry? At higher current, look at structure and cross-section first, plating second.
- Will it see sweat, humidity or salt? If yes, lean towards gold or added protection.
- How many mating or battery-change cycles? Many cycles make wear resistance of the plating important.
- What is the cost target? In mild environments at higher current, nickel is usually the economical choice.
4. Before you order
- The exact plating material and thickness are given in each part's datasheet and drawing
- Parts with the same pitch and pin count can still differ in plating, so do not choose on outline alone
- For critical products, order samples and run your own humidity or salt-spray tests before volume production
